Why should I use Smartpine?
Have you ever…
  • Purchased a length of timber that closely resembles a boomerang?
  • Spent hours in a hardware store picking through racks of twisted and knotty timber, searching for that "one piece"?
  • Ordered twice the amount of timber you require in the hope that you will have enough quality timber to finish the job (only to be left with a mountain of wasted offcuts)?
  • Had to buy timber longer than you need because it was the only length available?
  • Resorted to buying expensive hardwood timber at a high cost to yourself and the environment?
The solution is Smartpine – a ready-to-use premium timber product free from knots and defects, available in a full range of lengths, and delivered straight to your door.

What is Smartpine?
Smartpine is an engineered timber product manufactured from structural timber offcuts. Using a process known as finger-jointing, all knots and faults are removed from the timber and the remaining clear wood finger-jointed into long, straight lengths. The timber is then machined to a smooth. consistent finish, treated against termites and rot, and coated with a premium grade undercoat.

The result is a timber product which is:
  • Strong, Straight & Durable
  • Always in stock in a full range of lengths
  • Undercoated - ready to paint
  • Treated for outdoor, above-ground use
    (Australian Standard 1604 Level H3)
  • Lifetime Guaranteed against termites & rot
  • Free from arsenic & heavy metals
  • Plantation grown
  • Made here in WA

What are the Environmental Benefits of Smartpine?
Plantation timber is widely recognised as one of the best building products from an environmental perspective. Plantation timber is a renewable resource, and has significantly less embodied energy than other common building materials. Embodied energy refers to the quantity of energy required to manufacture, and supply to the point of use, a product, material or service.

Please Note: Lower is better

Smartpine magnifies these benefits, as it increases recovery rates at both the mill and factory. Short lengths of good timber, are given a new lease of life with our advanced manufacturing technology.
  • Smartpine is manufactured from a sustainable resource: WA plantation grown pine – As a business we don’t support the use of our native forests for building purposes and we don’t import endangered rainforest timber from overseas. We would rather see these fine timbers used for furniture or other high-value items.
  • Being grown in the south-west of Western Austrlia, there are significantly lower carbon emissions related to transportation of the raw product than for imported building materials.
  • We use short lengths of structural pine to make Smartpine. This timber could otherwise have been destined for wood chipping or landfill.
  • Smartpine does not contain heavy metals or arsenic, unlike CCA (green) treated pine.
  • We protect our Smartpine with an advanced LOSP treatment which is based on 100% organic chemistry. This has a lifetime guarantee against termite & rot attack. LOSP treatment is also long-term biodegradable, so if buried in soil, the treated timber will eventually break down naturally. Offcuts cannot be burned (as with any treated timber) however they can be disposed of with your normal household waste.

What is the technology in Smartpine?
To manufacture Smartpine we have had to commission a leading edge production facility, the first of its type in Western Australia. This facility includes:
  • The most advanced finger-jointing production line in Western Australia
  • An LOSP timber treatment plant
  • A specialised planing/molding machine
  • Laminating presses
  • An undercoating line, and
  • A strength and quality testing laboratory

Our high-precision finger-jointer
We are amongst the first manufacturers in Australia to use 4mm micro-structural finger-joints. These precision joints are not easy to achieve, but are both stronger and more visually appealing than conventional joints. As one industry veteran said, "Any mug can stick two bits of wood together. The trick is making them stay that way!". As knots & defects are removed during the manufacturing process, Smartpine is a very consistent product which makes for excellent results in outdoor projects, such as patios, pergolas, gazebos and fencing.

Our LOSP Treatment Plant
We are the first business in Western Australia to provide a totally metal-free timber treatment system that fully complies with Australian treatment Standards. Most timber in WA has traditionally been treated with CCA/arsenic based treatments. We do not use CCA in our Smartpine, so it is suitable for all outdoor, above ground projects. This includes play equipment and outdoor furniture.

Laminating Presses
As large posts and beams (commonly used in verandahs) can be difficult to procure, we also operate a laminating press whereby timber is ‘sandwiched’ and glued together under pressure to produce a large, strong member. Finger-jointed timber is also used in this process, reducing the need for timber beams to be cut from large trees and ensuring continual availability.

Paint Machine
Another of our special projects has been the design and installation of our paint machine, which is the first of its kind in WA. As timber left exposed to the weather has a tendency to develop cracks and warp, often requiring replacement, we made the decision that our Smartpine should be pre-undercoated. This increases the life of the product and also makes the product easier to use for the consumer.

Does Smartpine have a guarantee?
Smartpine has a 100% material-replacement guarantee if it were ever to fail structurally, provided it is installed and maintained as per our guidelines. It also has a lifetime treatment guarantee against termites & rot in all above ground-situations. For more information please feel free to contact us.

What lengths can I buy Smartpine in?
Smartpine is available in almost any standard length up to 6.0m, in 300mm increments. For more information on available lengths in the size/s you require please refer to the Smartpine Pricelist.

What size Smartpine should I use for my Rafters, Bearers, Beams, Joists, etc?
For information on the appropriate size Smartpine to use for your project, please refer to our Span Charts or contact one of our Sales Team for advice.

Can you cut my timber to size?
Depending on the quantity and your requirements we are happy to cut timber to your needs however you will need to purchase the nearest available full length.

Please note there may be a small charge depending on the volume of timber required to be cut. Our Sales Team will be happy to provide you with an exact quotation.

Can I paint Smartpine like normal timber?
All timber used externally should be painted or sealed to provide protection against weathering. Smartpine comes pre-undercoated to make painting much easier, and is ready for your choice of water-based or oil-based top coats. We recommend 2 or more top coats of a good quality exterior paint suitable for timber (always follow the manufacturers guidelines). After the initial coats of paint have been applied, a fresh coat of paint every few years will keep your structure looking great.

Please refer to Guidelines for Painting LOSP Treated Timber for more information

Can I use Smartpine in the ground?
Never use Smartpine in the ground. Smartpine is treated to Level H3 for outdoor, above ground use only and should be a minimum of 30mm above ground level. We offer a variety of metal stirrups for ground contact applications.

Can I use Smartpine indoors?
Smartpine is perfectly fine to use indoors. Being consistent and pre-undercoated, the possibilities in internal applications are endless. We would not advise however, for any treated timber product (including Smartpine) be used on food preparation surfaces.

What should I do when cutting or notching Smartpine?
We recommend when cutting Smartpine that any cut ends be resealed with a product such as Woodcare Preservative or similar.

This is available from our online store.

What fixings should I use in Smartpine?
There is no requirement for use of special fixings with Smartpine. While you should always work with screws and nails suitable for external use, our advanced treatment will not cause these to rust or degrade any more quickly than they would with untreated timber.

We offer a full range of Class 3 outdoor fixings,
including coutersunk screws, tex screws, bolts and nails.

How should I dispose of off-cuts of Smartpine?
Never burn treated pine of any kind. Off-cuts of Smartpine can be disposed of with your regular household garbage.

I love your TV commercial. Where was it filmed?
Thank you. We are very proud of our TV commercial, which is called "Smartpine Forest". It was the culmination of six months work, and we consider it to be an outstanding achievement for our growing business. Just like Smartpine itself.

The commercial was filmed in July 2008 on Cottesloe Beach by Director Scott Wright of Solo Films. If you would like to see it again, click below.
